The Artist
Born in Japan and trained in Vienna at the Hochschule für Musik from the age of twelve, Mitsuko Uchida has lived in London for more than two decades. She is renowned for her interpretations of Mozart and Schubert, both in the concert hall and on CD, and has also illuminated the music of Berg, Schoenberg, Webern and Boulez for a new generation of listeners. In 2002 she became artist-in-residence at the Cleveland Orchestra, initiating a long-running project in which she directs from the keyboard all of Mozart's piano concertos. Recent engagements include a tour of Europe with the Philharmonia and Esa-Pekka Salonen playing Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto and concerts with the Vienna Philharmonic and the Hagen Quartet. In 2004-05 Ms. Uchida was the subject of Carnegie Hall's Perspectives series. Her numerous recordings have received many awards, including two Gramophones, and she has been the recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society's Instrumentalist Award. Ms. Uchida has also demonstrated a long-standing commitment to aiding the development of young musicians. She is a trustee of the Borletti-Buitoni Trust and also co-director, with Richard Goode, of the Marlboro Music Festival.
