About This Performance

The Ann Hobson Pilot Fund Concert, endowed by Vivian and Mark Greenberg

Comprising 18 top Black and Latinx classical soloists, the Sphinx Virtuosi invites audiences to reflect on who we are and who we aspire to become. To mark our nation’s 250th anniversary, they present newly commissioned works and reimagined classics that reflect America’s many voices and shared ideals. Their program features Declaration, a bold original song cycle spotlighting Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano J’Nai Bridges, with music by acclaimed composer Damien Geter and a libretto by Sphinx founder Aaron Dworkin. Also spotlighted is a new arrangement of Jasmine Barnes’ Oh Shenandoah and the transcendent American Mirror, Part II by Derrick Skye.

American250: Sounds of Unity
Barnes: Oh Shenandoah (Arr.)
Geter: Declaration  Philadelphia Premiere
Skye: American Mirror, Part II
Sierra: Sinfonietta for Strings
Montgomery: Banner
Stravinsky: Concerto in D for Strings, Basle
