Philip Maneval

Executive Director

Philip Maneval, Executive Director, assisted in the conception and founding of the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society in 1986, and has guided its growth from seven concerts in its founding year to more than 100 performances and educational events each season today. He has worked to maintain its steadfast commitment to the highest artistic standards and a roster of world-class artists; to a rich diversity of composers, works and performing musicians; to a friendly and welcoming environment; to affordable ticket pricing and community outreach that opens doors to great music to all audiences; and to sound planning resulting in balanced budgets in every year of operations.

Philip is also General Manager of the Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont, where he has spent each summer since 1982.  In his role, he has assisted artistic directors Mitsuko Uchida and Jonathan Biss and, previously, Richard Goode and Rudolf Serkin; a great many other eminent chamber music artists; and the officers and members of its distinguished Board of Trustees.  He has also assisted in the purchase and management of Potash Hill, the 560-acre campus in southern Vermont that has been home to Marlboro Music since its founding in 1951.

Philip is active also as a composer. His works have been premiered by Felix Galimir, Ignat Solzhenitsyn, Cynthia Raim, Peter Wiley, the Miami and Chicago String Quartets, Siegfried Palm, Jennifer Montone, the Bucharest Philharmonic, the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and others. Many of his works are available through the Theodore Presser publishers.

Philip has a M.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania, where he studied with Richard Wernick, George Crumb and George Rochberg; and a Bachelor’s degree from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He has served on the boards of the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia, and Network for New Music, and he is past President of the Lyra Society. In 2023, Philip received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Musical Fund Society of Philadelphia.  Philip is married to Wendy Maneval, a prominent health care attorney and hospital administrator, and has two children.
