Yekwon Sunwoo, piano

As winner of the 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition, Yekwon Sunwoo performed as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of David Lockington. He has performed as soloist with Orchestre National de Belgique under the baton of Marin Alsop, l’Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie under the baton of Paul Goodwin, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Christopher Wilkins, l’Orchestre Philharmonique du Maroc, Incheon Philharmonic Orchestra, and Daegu Orchestra.

Mr. Sunwoo made his New York City debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in 2009 as winner of the Florida International Piano Competition. Other awards include First Prize in the 2012 Piano Campus International Concours, a laureate in the 2010 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels, First Prize in the 2009 Concours International de Piano "Interlaken Classics," First Prize in the Daegu Broadcasting Competition, First Prize in the Ewha-Kyung Hyang Competition, and Grand Prize in the Kukmin-Ilbo/Hansei University Competition. Mr. Sunwoo was invited to perform at the Summit Music Festival, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Toronto Summer Music Academy and Festival, and Music from Angel Fire. In addition, he has given numerous recitals throughout France, Germany, Switzerland, and Morocco.

Mr. Sunwoo’s vivid chamber music experience includes an invitation from the Kumho Asiana Cultural Foundation in 2007, touring Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama. He has collaborated with Ida Kavafian and Peter Wiley in 2010 with Curtis On Tour and with Roberto Dí­az on the Bay Chamber Concerts summer series in 2008. He has also performed with Gary Hoffman, Anne-Marie McDermott, and Michael Tree.

Mr. Sunwoo was born in AnYang, Korea, and began studying piano at the age of eight. He has studied with Min-ja Shin and Sun-wha Kim in Korea, and with Seymour Lipkin at Curtis Institute of Music. He is currently pursuing a Master of Music at the Juilliard School studying with Robert McDonald.
