Leo Edwards

Leo Edwards was a German-born Broadway composer. He appeared in vaudeville and worked for music publishing firms as a staff writer. His Broadway credits include The Wizard of Oz, The Blue Paradise, and the Ziegfeld Follies of 1912, 1913, 1915, 1916, 1917, 1921 and 1923.

Edwards co-wrote the popular song "My Fantasy" with Paul Whiteman and Jack Meskill, which is an adaptation of the Polovtsian Dances theme from the opera Prince Igor by Alexander Borodin.

Before their concert with PCMS, Castle of our Skins musicians Ashleigh Gordon, viola, Louise Toppin, coloratura soprano, Brian Dunbar, flute, and Kyle P. Walker, piano presented a dynamic and informative children’s concert to Play on Philly students at St. Francis de Sales School. Students got to hear selections from the concert program and ask questions of the musicians, including how Dr. Toppin sings so high! Thank you to POP for having us.

On Saturday, May 13th, violist and composer Nokuthula Ngwenyama visited Teenshop, Inc. at Drexel University to deliver a special presentation to students and families. Nokuthula performed for the group, talked about the history of classical music and its ties to African culture, and shared her own life story. A special thank you to Teenshop for hosting PCMS for this arts and culture workshop. 

Founded by Elleanor Jean Hendley, Teenshop, Inc. empowers “girls with goals” to become caring, courageous leaders and change agents in their communities and beyond.

Last month, PCMS brought a special live performance from the GRAMMY®-nominated Dover String Quartet to the Comcast Technology Center's Ralph J. Roberts Forum. Named after Comcast's founder, the forum is a two floor, 500-seat amphitheater located in the heart of Philadelphia's new Comcast Technology Center. In this unique venue, the campus and city come together to share stories, be inspired, and collaborate.

Tonight (5/12) join us at Perelman Theater for our penultimate concert of the 22-23 season. Dedicated to the memory of founding Trio member/pianist Joseph Kalichstein, this performance unites the remaining two members of the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio—Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson—with PCMS favorites Anna Polonsky and Nokuthula Ngwenyama.

PCMS concludes our season next Wednesday, May 17, at 7:30 pm in Perelman Theater! The chamber ensemble Castle of our Skins makes its PCMS debut with coloratura soprano Louise Toppin, pianist Kyle P. Walker, flutist Brian Dunbar, and violist Ashleigh Gordon. 

In addition to works by Valerie Coleman, Zenobia Powell Perry, Anthony R. Green, and Adolphus Hailstork, we are excited to present the world premiere of Allison Loggins-Hull's "Shine," a PCMS co-commission. 🎟 Tickets to the final concert of our 22-23 season are still available! 🎟

Please join us upstairs in the Kimmel Center's Comcast Circle at 6:30 for a special pre-concert conversation with Anthony R. Green and Allison Loggins-Hull, led by music scholar Dr. A. Kori Hill.
