Over 20 years ago, a group of young string players at London’s Royal College of Music came together around a collective passion for the quartet repertoire. A few years later, they won the Gramophone Award for Best Debut Recording, and the rest is history. Late works by Mozart, Bartók, and Mendelssohn are highlighted in the Belcea’s PCMS return. Of particular note is Mendelssohn’s final completed work—a piece of unprecedented intensity and perhaps his most tragic and impassioned work.
