About This Performance

Among our most distinctive chamber music voices, pianist Jonathan Biss is joined by three outstanding young artists—violinist Stephanie Zyzak; violist Zhanbo Zheng; and cellist Gabriel Martins—for an afternoon featuring two chamber music masterworks. With Schumann’s Davidsbündlertänze (“Dances of the League of David”) the spirit of the dance (Mazurka, waltz, polka, tarantella, Ländler) infuses the entire eighteen-piece set for solo piano in one way or another. Brahms’s third and final Piano Quartet is a piece known for its thrilling intensity, relentless rhythms, and delicious severity.
