On this inventive program, the funeral march in Tchaikovsky’s lush, romantic third quartet brings an immediately palpable sense of passage. From Amber Frozen follows a changing world through the endurance of a preserved insect. And Brahms’s Clarinet Quintet is among the great autumnal masterworks—a piece of extraordinary emotional depth, which seems to bring us to the very end of time.
