About This Performance

Jonathan Biss has established himself as “one of his generation’s most serious musical thinkers” (New York Times). His latest PCMS recital pairs one of Schubert’s last sonatas—“works which address the mysteries of life and death, and do so unflinchingly and with astonishing beauty”—with a newly commissioned work by Black composer Alvin Singleton. “The intention is not to suggest a particular connection between the old and new works: it is to show that one can immerse oneself in the greatest music of the past and work to ensure that the present and future are more just, and so much richer for it” (Jonathan Biss).
