It is with great sadness that we inform you of Tony Checchia’s passing on September 7, 2024. Tony passed away at his home in Philadelphia, the city in which he lived for all of his 94 years, with his family beside him.

While we mourn Tony’s passing, we celebrate his extraordinary life and achievements. Tony was a giant in the music world, yet his disarming personality, wonderful sense of humor, charm, and common touch belied his leadership skills and vision. Through the five decades he served Marlboro Music, by founding and leading PCMS in its first few decades, and through his many other pursuits, Tony advanced the artistry and careers of generations of musical leaders, and he transformed the musical life of Philadelphia.

The PCMS community extends heartfelt condolences to Tony’s wife, Benita Valente, and their son, Peter. You can read more about Tony’s remarkable life and legacy in the Philadelphia Inquirer‘s obituary (link in bio). ...

In one month, we launch our 2024-25 Season as twelve wind players from the esteemed Philadelphia Orchestra make their collective PCMS debut. They are joined by their colleagues, cellist Yumi Kendall and double bassist Joseph Conyers, for wind serenades by Mozart and Dvořák and the premiere of a new work by Nick DiBerardino, commissioned by PCMS.
