On May 15, PCMS presents the culmination of our two-month long Arts on the Mind festival with Marc Neikrug`s "A Song by Mahler," starring mezzo-soprano Jennifer Johnson Cano and baritone Ryan Bradford. This work of music theater centers on the changing realities of two characters: a concertizing singer who is diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s and her husband, who is also her accompanist.

We invite you to join us before the performance for "Music Theater in the Recital Hall," a Pre-Concert Talk with Michael Bolton, as he prepares us for the extraordinary journey that is Marc Neikrug’s "A Song by Mahler." He’ll explore how this music theater piece blurs the lines of art song and opera as he discusses Alzheimer’s and dementia in music and theater.

On April 15, @artzphilly hosted Expressing Our Minds, the second event in the Arts on the Mind Festival. Held at the Woodmere Art Museum, guests of all cognitive abilities sampled a variety of activities that help enhance the well-being of people living with dementia and their care-givers. Led by professionally-trained ARTZ facilitators, the sessions were inclusive, interactive, and joyful.

#ArtsOnTheMind continues: Join us tomorrow on 4/21, as well as 4/30, 5/13, and 5/15 to explore the vital role the arts have in developing and maintaining a mind as it ages, and the power of the arts to care for others’ minds with dignity and respect.

Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Martinez has a reputation for the lyricism of her playing, her compelling interpretations, and her elegant stage presence. Her playing has been described as “magical… a remarkable pianist, with a cool determination, a tone full of glowing color and a seemingly effortless technique” (Mark Swed/LA Times) and “compelling …versatile, daring and insightful” (New York Times).

This Wednesday (4/10) at Benjamin Franklin Hall, Martinez is joined by flutist Allison Loggins-Hull and mezzo-soprano Alicia Hall Moran for Loggins-Hull`s "Diametrically Composed" project, a collection of newly commissioned works featuring flute, voice and piano exploring the duality of being a mother and an artist.

Alicia Hall Moran, mezzo-soprano, is a multi-dimensional artist performing and composing between the genres of Opera, Art, Theater, and Jazz. Ms. Moran made her Broadway debut in the Tony-winning revival The Gershwins` Porgy and Bess, starring as Bess on the celebrated 20-city American tour. "Moran finds the truth of the character in her magnificent voice," Los Angeles Times.
